As a Senior Executive and CEO, I led many acquisitions throughout my career. In one of the first, I was very focused on having a detailed business case and presenting the right decision, but I didn’t make sure to involve all of the critical stakeholders during the due diligence process. That created unnecessary resistance, which substantially delayed the final outcome. The acquisition was successful, but the valuable lesson I learned made subsequent negotiations much more efficient and faster. To this day, in any decision-making process, I identify key stakeholders up front and engage them early in the process.
